In 1873, a German explorer sent a telegram announcing the end of exploration of the Upper Nile and the presence of two "pygmies." The word "pygmy," now derogatory, then referred to certain populations inhabiting the territories of Central and West Africa. The scientific world went into a frenzy, and thus two children were deported to Europe only to be observed, classified, and analyzed. Chiara Abastanotti (Figli della Foresta, with Igiaba Scego, Beccogiallo), author of the manifesto for scrittorincittà 2026, tells the story of Tukuba and Makunka in comics, dehumanized by a science that never saw them as people, symbols of the repression of Italy's colonial past. Andrea Valente.
