The history of skiing between myth and reality • Meeting with Manuel Riz

The white slope

Thursday 11 December , 6pm Cuneo Civic Library , first floor hall (via Cacciatori delle Alpi 9, Cuneo) • Free , online reservations

Before becoming the queen of the Winter Olympics, the sport of the great idols of the recent past and the champions of today, and the countless enthusiasts who flock to the Alpine valleys every winter, skiing was a technology born in prehistory, a cultural object that has evolved over the centuries, and which has found, in the different eras and social contexts in which it developed, diverse functions and uses. The White Slope. Social History of Skiing (Diabolo Edizioni) is an innovative work that combines historical rigor with the lightness of comics to recount the transformation of skiing over time: from a hunting tool and means of transportation to a global sporting and cultural phenomenon. Manuel Riz offers a passionate and well-documented account, which moves and provokes reflection on the value of this ancient technology and its impact on human lives and the Alpine regions. This event is organized in collaboration with Imaginé and the Cuneo Montagna Festival on the occasion of International Mountain Day. Irene Borgna .

Manuel Riz , born and raised in the Dolomites, a cartoonist and ski instructor, but above all a great lover of Alpine cultures and traditions, accompanies us with his colorful drawings, rich in detail and information, the fruit of years of research, through the stories of the women and men who have chosen to slide down "the white slope".
