The idea for the prize started with the Turin Book Fair and was taken up by a group of readers in Cuneo. Since 1998 it has been organised by the Board for Culture of the
Comune di Cuneo, who organises it through the Civic Library.
The first novels by Italian writers are read by some
committees of readers who choose the winner and three particularly interesting authors. Numerous boards take part at these readings including adults (both in Italy and in France) and students.
The winner and choice of two authors are chosen by the committees of Cuneo. In addition the
committes of students choose their favorite author from a selection of novels given to them.
Each year a new Italian writer is invited by the committees of French literature to Chambéry in May for the "Festival du Premier Roman" and to Nice in June for the "Festival du Livre".
The current festival ends with the prize-giving ceremony during
scrittorincittà.
